Competitors in the Academy Olympics

10th Annual Academy Olympics (2016) Friday, April 29, 2016 Building L--HFC Main Campus (South Drive) 8:30 am - 2:15 pm

For the past 10 years, HFC has hosted the Academy Olympics, an event designed to bring together secondary and post-secondary Cisco Networking Academy students throughout Southeast Michigan for a day of friendly competition. Participating students, instructors, and networking professionals look forward to this yearly event held in late April or early May.

The Academy Olympics draws around 100 students who are divided into teams of 4–6 during registration. Team members have an opportunity to meet after the orientation to get to know each other, pick a team name and choose a team captain. The teams then rotate between several activities throughout the day. Competitions are designed so that students do not need to complete the entire 4-course CCNA preparation program to be able to participate. Activities include:

  • Cable Making
  • Router Configuration and Troubleshooting
  • Network Addressing (Subnetting)
  • Quiz Bowl

In addition to the above activities, teams hear a presentation from network engineers titled, “A Day in the Life of a Systems Engineer”. Students enjoy this Q-and-A session led by Cisco systems engineers and other networking professionals. Presenters discuss how they began their careers in networking and what a typical work day is like.

Breakfast and lunch is provided for participants and the day culminates with an announcement of the winning team and the much-anticipated drawing for door prizes. In the past, generous donations from organizations such as Cisco Press/Pearson, Access Interactive, Canton Computers, Best Buy’s Geek Squad, Cisco Systems, and SIGMAnet, have included refurbished laptops, iMacs, routers, switches, books, and apparel.

This friendly competition allows students to work as part of a team, demonstrate their skills, and network with other academy students and instructors. In recent years, it has also become a pre-screening opportunity for networking companies looking for new hires, resulting in interviews and even job offers.

Current students interested in participating in the Academy Olympics should see their Computer (Cisco) Networking Academy instructor for more information.
